RCDC’s primary service is to implement the Resilient Neighbourhood Model, which aims to provide context-specific solutions. No two sites are the same, which is why RCDC has built a collective of partners, from which service providers can be drawn that are required to meet the needs of specific projects.

Ben Mansfield worked as a public space strategy designer on an informal settlement upgrading development in Khayelitsha, South Africa. Through this work he assembled a team who delivered a neighbourhood farm at a school and later established a not-for-profit company to develop unused land at the school to bring programmes and infrastructure responding to the learners’ and neighbourhood residents’ needs.
Through this experience, he realised the need to offer alternative built environment delivery models in under-resourced areas in a manner that could meet long-term social and economic objectives and facilitate broader cross-sectoral involvement from the civic, academic, public and private sector. He founded RCDC in 2017 with Byron Hanslo to further develop the RCDC model, known as the Resilient Neighbourhood Model (RNM) and the range of projects implemented.
